Kokoseb Gold Project - Groundwater development and pipeline infrastructure – Omaruru Alluvial Plain

The Proponent, on behalf of NamWater, proposes to construct and operate a wellfield with approximately fifteen (15) production boreholes, a 105 km above-ground bulk water supply pipeline and associated infrastructure from the OmAP to the proposed Kokoseb Gold Project on ML 274.

Associated infrastructure will include collector pipelines, booster pump stations, flow metres, control valves, manholes and water storage reservoirs. The proposed Project will also include the construction of a new monopole overhead distribution line (33 kilovolt (kV)) from the proposed NamPower Kokoseb 132 kV metering station to the wellfield and pipeline booster pump stations to supply the electricity required for bulk water abstraction and pumping.

The boreholes are currently in the process of being established as part of the water supply investigation programme for the proposed Kokoseb Gold Project. The groundwater development scope of work includes the installation and construction of borehole pumps and headworks, access tracks where required, installation of collector pipelines connecting the production boreholes to the main bulk water supply pipeline, trenching and excavation works for pipeline installation, construction of booster pump stations and installation of the overhead power supply infrastructure to the wellfield and booster pump stations.

ECC's Role

ECC has been engaged by Mandarin Investments (Pty) Ltd as the independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to facilitate the entire ESIA process. Before the start of the proposed Project, an environmental clearance certificate is required in terms of the Environmental Management Act, 7 of 2007 and the associated EIA Regulations. A final decision regarding the above-mentioned application will be made by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT), Department of Environmental Affairs and Forestry (DEAF).
